SPECIALIZED HIGH SCHOOL ADMISSIONS PROCESS

specialized high school admissions

As you probably already know, the SHSAT is taken by 8th or 9th graders who are interested in applying to any of eight of New York City's Specialized High Schools:

  • The Bronx High School of Science
  • The Brooklyn Latin School
  • Brooklyn Technical High School
  • High School for Mathematics, Science and Engineering at the City College
  • High School of American Studies at Lehman College
  • Queens High School for the Sciences at York College
  • Staten Island Technical High School
  • Stuyvesant High School

So what is the process for admissions to one of the specialized high schools?

First you need to get in touch with your school guidance counselor. The counselor
will give you an admission ticket to the SHSAT. If you are interested in the LaGuardia High School of Music & Art, then your guidance counselor will also give you the appropriate admissions ticket for this school.

Your SHSAT test ticket will arrive approximately a week before you need to take the test.
It will contain all the necessary information you need to know, including the location of the test, the test date and time, your student ID number and school ID number.

On the back of the ticket, you will need to list the schools (in preferential order)that you are applying for. You don't have to list all of the specialized schools, but you won't be able to apply to these schools at a later date.

You will take the SHSAT test in October. You can prepare for the test in many ways, including by downloading SHSAT online free tests provided by the DOE.

Following the test date, you should submit a New York City Public High School Admissions Application to your guidance counselor. On this application, you will list other high schools/programs around New York City that you want to attend. Note that you need to fill out this form if you want notification of your SHSAT test results.

In February, you will find out whether you have been admitted to a specialized high school, based on your score on the SHSAT.
