The NYS Math exam is administered to students in grades 3-8. The test is constructed by Questar Assessments Inc. and is aligned with Common Core mathematics standards.
While NYS Math was previously available on paper only, schools will have the option of administering the test on computers starting in 2017.
All questions are multiple choice, short response, or extended response. The number of questions of each type varies by grade level.
In more recent years, New York state teachers have played an increased role in selecting and evaluating these questions, and this role will continue to increase in coming years.
Beginning with the NYS Math test 2016, students took the exam untimed. This change will continue into the 2017 assessment. If needed, students may have a full school day to complete the test, as long as they are working productively.

Test Structure
For fifth grade students, the NYS Math assessment is administered in three sessions over the course of three days.
Students have as much time as necessary to complete each session, but students typically need 70-80 minutes for Sessions 1 and 2 and 80-90 minutes to complete Session 3.
The test structure for the NYS Math test 2017 will remain the same as the structure for the NYS Math test 2016.
Session 1 consists of 22 multiple choice questions.
Session 2 includes 23 multiple choice questions.
Session 3 requires fifth grade students to answer 6 short response questions and 4 extended response.
