In order to attend Hunter College High School, students must either be admitted in kindergarten (through testing and interviews) or starting in 7th grade (through an entrance exam). During 6th grade, students who score in the 90th percentile on their statewide exams are invited to take the Hunter test. Of these two to three thousand children, about 175 join Hunter for high school. The typical acceptance rate for Hunter is about 6% each year, making it a more competitive school than any Ivy League college! That’s why it is key for interested students to prep for the exam and be ready to show their best work.

Because the high school curriculum finishes in 11th grade, students have their entire senior year free for electives, internships, and college classes. The incredible flexibility during senior year is great for testing out possible careers or getting even further ahead before college begins. Independent studies are also possible, particularly for intensive language study. All of these perks make Hunter appealing for New York City students.
