Hunter Test Prep| Math Section

Students who want to attend Hunter College High School must ace the entrance exam in order to begin their studies in seventh grade. The admissions test gives students three hours to complete questions on English Language Arts, mathematics, and essay writing.

There are approximately thirty math questions on the exam, and each question is in multiple choice format. Students are not allowed to have a calculator for the exam. There is no guessing penalty, so test-takers should put down an answer for every problem, even if they’re not sure of the solution.

Hunter Test Prep | What’s Tested on the Math Section?

The questions in the math section cover a wide variety of topics which students should have learned by midway through sixth grade. However, the Hunter test is known for giving complicated word problems and tricky possible answers for questions, so students should spend some time brushing up on word problems before the exam.

A few of the questions require students to compute values using decimals, fractions, percents, and whole numbers. Since there are no calculators allowed, test-takers must rely on strong mental math skills and the ability to carry out paper and pencil calculations, as well as practice with converting decimals to fractions or percents and vice versa.

In addition to these computation questions, the math problems test students on their ability to apply rules of division, understand probability, calculate rate and averages, use ratios, work with time and money values, find areas and perimeters, and recognize numerical and visual patterns. Some questions bring several of these topics into play at once, so students need to have plenty of practice with word problems and multi-step solutions.

Hunter Test Prep | Tips for Math Mastery

Some topics on the math section are straightforward, such as the computation questions or basic geometry problems. As long as test-takers have done well in math at school and can carry out calculations with paper and pencil, they should not have a problem on these questions.

The trickier word problems can be challenging for any student, so making time for tough practice problems is key during Hunter test prep. It’s important to develop a reliable strategy for tackling complicated problems, so students should try a few techniques to see what works best. Drawing pictures for geometry problems can help, as well as building simple models to understand word problems, or using have/need boxes, or estimating the ballpark value of a numerical solution to eliminate a few answer choices. By practicing all these techniques, students will feel more prepared to tackle the word problems on test day.
