Hunter High School Admissions | Why go to Hunter High School & What are the Odds of Getting In?

Unlike the public schools in New York City, Hunter College High School gets much of its funding from the City University of New York, not the Board of Education. This has plenty of benefits for students, including a wide range of classes to take, far more freedom than in traditional public and private schools, and an accelerated curriculum that ends in eleventh grade, leaving all of senior year open to whatever students choose to take. It’s no surprise that so many parents are curious about Hunter!

Incredibly Competitive Process

In order to attend Hunter College High School, students must either be admitted in kindergarten (through testing and interviews) or starting in 7th grade (through an entrance exam). During 6th grade, students who score in the 90th percentile on their statewide exams are invited to take the Hunter test. Of these two to three thousand children, about 175 join Hunter for high school. The typical acceptance rate for Hunter is about 6% each year, making it a more competitive school than any Ivy League college! That’s why it is key for interested students to prep for the exam and be ready to show their best work.

Awesome World-Class Education

Students from Hunter routinely move on to do well in life, and they perform exceptionally during high school years. Nearly a quarter of the Scholastic Art and Writing awards go to Hunter students, and there are several Intel Science Talent Search winners among Hunter’s alumni. The Wall Street Journal often names Hunter as one of the top schools in the country, even though Hunter competes with expensive and prestigious private schools.

Strong College Results

The average SAT score at Hunter is extremly high, and the majority of students choose to attend Ivy League colleges, Golden Dozen schools, and specialized state schools around the country. The graduation rate is above 99%, and the alumni network keeps students connected for years after graduation.

Lots of Freedom

Because the high school curriculum finishes in 11th grade, students have their entire senior year free for electives, internships, and college classes. Many students choose to take classes for college credit at NYC schools, and others pursue internships in hospitals, law firms, or community centers for class credit. The incredible flexibility during senior year is great for testing out possible careers or getting even further ahead before college begins. Independent studies are also possible, particularly for intensive language study. All of these perks make Hunter appealing for New York City students.
